My Rod Catalog

bamboo fly rods by George Maurer

I build bamboo fly rods in two distinct taper families, and while applying labels to rod actions provides a useful shorthand for describing rod actions, it shouldn’t ever be taken too literally.

For example, one of my rod lines is a set of medium-fast compound/progressive tapers which reflect the smooth casting qualities of the Payne and Granger tapers.

They’re similar to the above-mentioned rods, but they’ve been test-fished, altered and tuned enough that they’re distinctly different.

The same is true of my semi-parabolic rods derived from the Paul Young tapers. None are direct copies of any Paul Young rod, and all share characteristics which set them apart from any Paul Young rod.

People who cast my tapers like them. A lot. Tom Chandler said my Trout Bum Light rod was “easily the most civilized interpretation of an 8’ Paul Young-style para I’d ever cast.”

I hope you get the chance to cast my rods – and enjoy fishing them as much as I enjoyed crafting them.
