fly and bamboo fly rod

On February 21, 2008, George Maurer passed away suddenly. His humor, good nature, respect for others, helpfulness, talent, and gift for teaching will be missed by all those who came in contact with him.

Godspeed, George.

**********

I love bamboo rods. I love how they cast. I love how they feel and look.

I hadn’t built too many before I realized that building a bamboo fly rod is a craft — the culmination of a long, long list of detailed operations — but that the real “art” in a rod lies with the taper.

Pretty soon, I was experimenting with tapers; I’d build a rod, fish it (or give it to an accomplished fly fisher) and use that feedback to tweak the taper of the next rod.

I’ve been fortunate to receive feedback from distinguished fly fishers like John Gierach, Ed Engle, Harry Middleton, Carmine Lisella and many, many others.

This has been going on for nearly two decades, and the rod catalog listed on this site is the end result of that work.

One friend embarrassingly called me “The Taper Doctor”– an unfortunate nickname that stuck, and while it’s a flattering thought from an excellent caster, I’m hoping for something a little more reverent on my tombstone.

Still, there’s a hint of truth to it, and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished with my tapers. Test cast my rods, and I think you’ll enjoy them too.
